Combining Tarot Cards With Magick
If you love tarot cards, and also practice in the magickal arts, then you’ll love knowing that you can combine these two together, for some quick spell casting that brings amazing results. First off, let’s clarify two very important factors of tarot cards and magickal spell casting.
With tarot cards, each card represents numerous primary energy factors, as well as numerous secondary energy factors. In other words, their is no one single meaning, translation or interpretation for a card. Instead, the mastery of tarot reading comes from being able to extract the specific meaning, translation and interpretation for each individual person you are reading for them, as well as the extracted specific interpretation of any spread that you might call upon for your divination.
Likewise, when it comes to magickal spell casting, when you are compiling the components for your spell, you must always keep in mind, that every item that you are choosing to incorporate into your spell contains multiple primary and secondary energy signatures. For any magickal spell to be as effective as it can be, you must select which energy properties you wish to highlight and emphasize within each component/ingredient. For example: Cinnamon contains energies representative of healing, power, psychic attunement, protection, abundance and spiritual enhancement. If you are casting a money spell, then you would want to call upon the cinnamon to infuse it’s abundance energies into the spell. If you are casting a psychic defense shield spell, to amour you from the negative energies of others, than you would want to call upon the protection energies of cinnamon to be infused into the spell. In other words, highlight and isolate the predominant energy signature you are wishing to use for each spell ingredient or component for maximum effectiveness.
Now, as for combining tarot cards with magick, if you are either in a situation where you are pressed for time, can’t locate or afford all the components you need or desire for some spell casting, or you are traveling and acquiring all the needed spellcasting ingredients would be quite cumbersome, you can quite effectively substitute your typical spell ingredients/components with the appropriate tarot card. Using tarot cards in your spells, makes for a useful tool for magickal shortcuts and substitution in both spellwork and ritual. And, just as explained previously, that tarot cards like magickal spell components, vibrate with specific primary and secondary energy signatures, you need to be cognizant of these, and call upon the most appropriate energy signature contained within each specific card you choose to use for your spell. The end goal, is to substitute your typical spellcasting ingredients/components, with the most tarot card(s) (and specific energy signature within that card) that harmonize with your spells intent.
Note: If you typically like to use a statue or picture that is representative of goddess and god energies on your altar, or in your spellcasting area, here are some good tarot card choices for magickal substitution. The High Priestess, the Empress and the Moon tarot cards, are all fitting symbols of goddess energies, while the Magician, the Emperor and the Sun tarot cards all make for good representation of god force energies.
Below, is a guide to the magickal attributes of the Major Arcana, as mentioned in Melanie Marquis’s book ‘The Witches Bag of Tricks’. Note, what is given here as the qualities of the cards that can be invoked during spellwork. (These do not necessarility reflect divinatory interpretations.)
